For the cover of my forthcoming novel, THE ZEBRA AFFAIRE, I needed an icon that would quickly capture the searing divisions of 1976 apartheid South Africa. As my story is about Passion confronting Prejudice, we've developed this image/icon to give the reader an instant insight into the tensions build within the pages of the book.
But, in real South Africa this sign never existed. BUT A LAW DID--expressly prohibiting love across the color-divide.
Instead, these are examples of what people of color were confronted with on a daily basis in the pre-Mandela South Africa:
